HUAWEI FreeClip 2 Review: Opening Up a Whole New World of Air-Like Wear
A detailed review of the HUAWEI FreeClip 2 open-ear earbuds. Covering my choice between it and Shokz OpenDots, details on Yahoo! Shopping campaigns, and hands-on impressions of comfort, sound quality, and connectivity.
Introduction
Recently, taking advantage of a Yahoo! Shopping campaign, I bought a pair of HUAWEI’s open-ear clip-on earbuds — the HUAWEI FreeClip 2. Thanks to very fast shipping, they arrived at my home the next morning. Having used them deeply for some time, today I’d like to share my unboxing and thoughts on these earbuds.
To be honest, I’ve always been a loyal fan of traditional “noise-canceling (NC) headphones.” From Bose’s noise-canceling earbuds to Sony’s over-ear and in-ear models, I’ve owned several high-end audio devices. I love immersing myself in music, and noise cancellation has always been an absolute must when going out or taking flights. Because of this, I never gave open-ear earbuds a second thought. I used to think they were only for sports so you could hear your surroundings, and since I didn’t have that specific need, I never considered them.
However, I ended up getting completely hooked on open-ear earbuds.
I realized that the true magic of these earbuds isn’t really the “ambient sound awareness” itself, but the air-like, weightless wearing comfort — freeing your ear canal from any stuffiness or pressure.
Traditional in-ear NC earbuds get stuffy and itchy when worn for a long time, sometimes even causing ear canal irritation. Larger over-ear headphones are a nightmare in summer due to the heat. On top of that, since I wear glasses, the constant pressure of the earcups against the frames of my glasses would make my ears start aching after just a short while.
But that day when I randomly tried a pair of clip-on earbuds at an electronics store, I was blown away. There was absolutely no discomfort. They clipped lightly to the edge of my ear, feeling so weightless they felt more like a stylish accessory than a piece of tech. That experience is what started me on my search for the perfect pair of open-ear earbuds.
The Choice: Shokz OpenDots vs. HUAWEI FreeClip 2
Once I decided to get a pair, I narrowed my options down to the two most popular competitors on the market: the Shokz OpenDots and the HUAWEI FreeClip 2.
Initially, I was leaning towards Shokz OpenDots. Unfortunately, only the first generation is available in Japan; the second generation has not been released here yet. I did see the first-generation OpenDots SE version on discount at Costco, but upon checking the specs, I realized the SE version lacked wireless charging, and the price wasn’t particularly cheap either.
That’s when I noticed the newly released HUAWEI FreeClip 2. Compared to the first generation, the “C-bridge Design” on the FreeClip 2 has been optimized for better structure and flexibility (offering about 25% softer flexibility to reduce clamping pressure). It is extremely lightweight, uses a high-performance shape-memory alloy core wrapped in skin-friendly liquid silicone, and supports wireless charging. More importantly, it features the latest Bluetooth 6.0, providing solid hardware assurance for daily connection stability.
As for pricing:
- On Amazon Japan, Shokz OpenDots sells for around 20,000 JPY.
- HUAWEI FreeClip 2 is priced around 24,000 JPY.
Since I didn’t want to pay a premium for Shokz’s older-generation product, I shifted my focus entirely to the new Huawei earbuds.
Yahoo! Shopping Campaign and Gifts
Conveniently, Yahoo! Shopping ran a three-day campaign in May with very high points-back rebates. When factoring in the points, the actual cost of the HUAWEI FreeClip 2 ended up being cheaper than the first-generation Shokz OpenDots! I ordered them immediately, and they arrived the next morning.
Huawei also went all out on promotional gifts and services this time:
- Gift variety: The package came with three different styles of decorative ear accessories (girls would absolutely love these, and the packaging was beautiful). I chose a sturdy, high-quality headphone strap which has a premium texture.
- One-year free loss insurance: This was one of the biggest selling points for me. After receiving them, I logged into the official website and registered my device serial number (SN) to activate a free one-year loss insurance. If I lose a single earbud within the year, I can get a replacement at a very low cost. For wire-free clip-on earbuds, this is an incredible peace of mind.
- Review gifts: Leaving a review also qualifies you to receive additional gift items.
Design & “Air-Like” Wear Comfort
Upon opening the box, my first impression was how compact and refined it looked.
After downloading the “AI Life” app, pairing was incredibly quick. It supports multi-device connections, making switching between devices seamless.

The charging case is smooth and rounded, and very compact. Here is a size comparison with my Bose Ultra case:
As you can see, the FreeClip 2 charging case is scaled down to the limit, saving a lot of pocket space. Despite the tiny footprint, the battery life is outstanding—a remarkable feat of balance in industrial design.
The wearing experience is where the FreeClip 2 truly shines. They feel incredibly light. Thanks to their symmetrical design, there’s no need to check which earbud goes where; they automatically detect which ear they are on and adjust the stereo channels accordingly.
As a glasses wearer, traditional headphones always clashed with my frames. But the FreeClip 2 clips onto the outer ear, completely avoiding the arms of my glasses. Even after wearing them for a whole day at work, I felt absolutely no discomfort, stuffiness, or itching. They look great too.
Actual Performance
1. Exceptional Bluetooth Connectivity
True to Huawei’s roots as a communications giant, the Bluetooth connectivity on these earbuds is outstanding. While older Bluetooth devices would stutter or drop connection when moving away or behind walls, I can walk between the first and second floors of my house with the FreeClip 2 without any dropouts or degradation in sound quality. Even standing right next to a working microwave, the connection remained solid without any interference.
2. Impressive Sound Quality and Custom EQ
I didn’t expect much in terms of audio quality from open-ear earbuds, but the FreeClip 2 sounds surprisingly clear with a wide soundstage. It easily rivals traditional on-ear headphones. Moreover, you can adjust the EQ in the AI Life app. I followed some audiophile-recommended settings from online forums, and customizing the EQ gave the overall sound a massive upgrade across all frequencies.
3. Excellent Call Noise Cancellation
To test the mic, I called a friend using the earbuds. They mentioned that my voice sounded extremely clear and loud, as if I were speaking directly into a microphone. Even better, it managed to isolate my voice and block out almost all background noise. It makes for an excellent productivity tool for online meetings and remote work.
4. Sound Leakage Test
Due to the physical nature of open-ear design, some sound leakage is unavoidable. At high volumes with bass-heavy music, people sitting close by might hear a faint beat. Because of this, it’s probably best to turn down the volume on crowded trains or in quiet libraries. However, for a regular office, home, or outdoor use, sound leakage isn’t an issue at all.
A Quick Note on the Collector’s Edition
I heard that this model is currently extremely popular and marked up in China due to supply shortages, so I’m glad to have bought it smoothly in Japan.
Interestingly, just yesterday (June 1, 2026), Huawei announced the HUAWEI FreeClip 2 Collector’s Edition at their new product launch. Priced at 1,499 RMB (a bit higher than the standard edition’s 1,299 RMB), it features a “jewelry-box” style charging case, a translucent body design, and a physical AI button for quick voice commands.
That said, I am still extremely satisfied with my standard version. Unless you have a strong need for real-time translation tools or the special styling, the standard version offers excellent utility and sound quality at a better price point.
Conclusion: Redefining Earbuds
The HUAWEI FreeClip 2 has completely rewritten my perception of open-ear earbuds. I used to think open-ear design was purely for hearing external environments, but I’ve realized:
“While turning the volume up too high will still block ambient sounds, the magic of open-ear earbuds isn’t just about hearing external info. It’s about liberating your ear canals from physical stress while still enjoying great sound.”
If you’re tired of traditional earbuds causing ear pain, stuffiness, or clashing with your glasses, I highly recommend giving these a try. It truly opens up a whole new world.
Finally, for those looking to buy in Japan, here’s a quick comparison of the purchasing channels and my shopping tips:
Shopping Tips:
- Amazon Japan’s price remains relatively stable, with occasional discounts during Prime Day or other big sales.
- However, I highly recommend buying directly from Yahoo! Shopping during their promotional events. The points-back rewards on Yahoo are very generous, which often makes it significantly cheaper than Amazon’s sale prices.
